This is not the matter of checking the divisibility by 7
There are so many situations to apply this concept while solving problems in number theory

Is it possible to divide 1000 into two parts such that one part will be multiple of 19 & other will be multiple of 47?????????

Hari | (Maths) December 7, 2009 at 7:17 PM

1000 = 47 X 14 + 19 X 18

MURALEEDHARAN.CR December 7, 2009 at 8:06 PM

is 257 divisible by 7
2*2+5*3+7=4+15+7=26 since 26 is not divisible by 7,257 isnot divisible by 7
ie 100a+10b+c is divisible by 7
if 2a+3b+c is divisible by 7
(if 100 is divided by 7 the remainder is 2.if 10 is divided by 7 the remainder is 3}

is 1458 divisible by 7
458-1=457
2*4+5*3+7=30 it is not divisible by 7. so 1458 is not divisible by 7
(If 1000 is divided by 7 the remainder is 6 ie -1}
ie 1000a+100b+10c+d is divisible by 7 if-a+2b+3c+d is divisible by 7
is 325468 divisible by 7
468-325=143

1*2+4*3+3=17 it is not divisible by 7
so 325468 is not divisible by 7
(If 10000 is divided by 7 the the remainder is 4 ie -3
If 100000 is divided by 7 the the remainder is 5 ie -2}

ie 100000a+10000b+1000c+100d+10e+f is divisible by 7 if -2a-3b-c+2d+3e+f is divisible by 7

is 123456789 divisible by 7
789-456+123=333+123=456
2*4+5*3+6=29 it is not divisible by 7 so 123456789 is not divisible by 7
and so on

JOHN P A December 7, 2009 at 8:49 PM

Murali sirs last method is suitable for checking the divisiblity by 13 also
We can make it as a game for small children study division in 7 th standard
Write a big number in the calculator
Eg 12839506173
Put + and - alternalely from right after 3 digits
12+839-506+173
then click = in the calculator in linux
we get a small number
if it is divisible by 7 or 13 the number itself is divisible by 7 or 13

First of all sorry that i cant type in malayalam,one method to check divisibility by 7 ( will be useful only for big numbers,say 8 or 9 digits)
Divide the number into groups of 3 from the right most place.add the 1 st,3rd,5 th etc groups from right and substract that from the sum of 2 nd ,4 th ,6 th,8 th places

eg: 3465549539569

3|465|549|539|569

(569+549+3)-(539+465)=117

117/7 => Remainder is 5
therefore the remainder when 3465549539569 /7 is 5
Remember this method is useful only for bigger numbers

GMW December 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM

oru karyam vittu poyee..the above rule/method can be used to check divisibility by 13 also...

In many a situation to find the remainder and hence the divisibility Fermats theorem is very useful.I am not elaborating that here.Lots of materials are available in the net
jus a brief representation i will provide here
Remainder when (x^e/N)=1
iff, x and N are co-primes ( No common factor other than 1)
AND
e is the Euler number of N
where Euler number (e) of a number
N which can be written as product of prime nos (a,b,c etc) as N=a^m b^n c^p is N * (1-1/a) (1-1/b) (1-1/c)
Note:Rem (a/b) denotes the remainder when a is divided by b

eg : Remainder when 7^134/8 is calculated by
Step 1: Check x and N are co primes .Here x=7 and N=8.
Step 2: Find Euler No of N=8
8=2^3
therefore,Euler No for 8 is 8*(1-1/2)=4
Step 3 : use Fermat s theorem
ie Rem [(7^(a product of 4))/8]=1
ie Rem (7^132/8)=1 and the remaining Rem (7^2/8) =>Rem (49/8)=1
Therefore the remainder when 7^134/8= 1*1=1

A paper is folded in the form of right angled triangle. A portion of the triangle is cut by drawing a line parallel to the hypotenuse of the triangle.The length of the hypotenuse is reduced by 35% after the cut.
If the area of the original triangle was 34 what is the area of the new triangle?

Chord problem:

I saw that only now. Since questions are buried in comments of old posts, many are overlooked. Now, I am subscribing comments feed in Google reader.

I got an answer 1.49655681. Probably it is meant to be solved with pi = 22/7, in which case the answer may be exactly 1.5; not sure.

I could not solve it in a way a high school student can solve. I got the formula

x - sin x = (2 * pi/9)

and solved for x using a numerical method (bisection).

If someone has a solution for high school mathematics (or knows how that trigonometric equation can be solved analytically), please post it.

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 13, 2009 at 9:43 PM

Answer to folded-cut triangle's problem.

Since the side became (13/20) of the original, the area will become (13/20)^2, that is (169/400).

Answer = 34 * 169 / 400 = 14.365

(Vijayan Sir's 14.356 must be a typo)

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 13, 2009 at 11:17 PM

I am sorry. I miscalculated. I took 8 cm as the radius in the chord problem.

So, if the chord length is 8 cm, the radius is 5.3456.

One day an American went to a bicycle shop in India and purchased a bycycle cost 400$.He had only two travellers cheque with him, 250$ each.He given it to the shop keeper.

But the shop keeper didnt have the travellers cheque transaction fecility.He exchanged the traveellers cheque with the nearby shop who have such fecility,take 400$ and balance 100$given to the customer.

But the next day the the nearby shop keeper came with the travellers cheque and said that it is a fake cheque not real cheque and so he need his monay back.The shop keeper given the money back(500$)

Actually what is his loss in this business?

I checked my calculation again. The answer to the chord problem is 5.3456.

My analysis is here.

Aziz sir,

If the radius is 8cm and the chord length is also 8 cm, the angle subtended will be 60 degrees. Then the chord will divide the area into around 1:34. (See the document above)

Vijayan sir,
Please publish your analysis.

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 15, 2009 at 6:27 AM

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 15, 2009 at 6:40 AM

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 15, 2009 at 6:58 AM

chord :my analysis/
since the chord divides the circle into 1:8 and the length of chord is 8,the radius is more than 4 cm

9x=22/7 *r^2
x= 22/7*1/9*r^2
x= 22/63*r^2
r^2=63*x/22

r=sqrt (63*x/22)

if the value of x=154,we get r= sqrt(63*154/22)
r=sqrt( 441)
r=21

is there any mistake in my calculation ,pl check this .

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 15, 2009 at 8:24 AM

r=sqrt (63*x/22) വരെ യോജിപ്പാണു്‌. അതു കഴിഞ്ഞ സ്റ്റെപ്പാണു പ്രശ്നം. x=154 എന്നു്‌ എങ്ങനെ പറയാൻ പറ്റും? സർക്കുലർ സെഗ്മെന്റിന്റെ പരപ്പളവാണു്‌ അതു്‌. അതു്‌ ആരത്തെയെന്നതു പോലെ ഞാണിന്റെ നീളത്തെയും ആശ്രയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. 21 ആരവും 8 ഞാണിന്റെ നീളവുമായാൽ സെഗ്മെന്റിന്റെ പരപ്പളവു്‌ 2.0543 ചതുരശ്രസെന്റിമീറ്ററേ ഉണ്ടാവൂ, 154 ഉണ്ടാവില്ല.

ഉദാ: a = 2, b = 3, c = 230 എന്നായാല്‍ ax + by = c എന്നതിന് താഴെപ്പറയുന്ന പോസിറ്റീവ് ഉത്തരങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ട്:

x = 112, y = 2
x = 109, y = 4
x = 106, y = 6
x = 103, y = 8
x = 100, y = 10
x = 97, y = 12
x = 94, y = 14
...
...
x = 1, y = 76

An ant is crawling at a rate of one foot per minute along a strip of rubber which can be infinitely and uniformly stretched. The strip is initially one yard long and one inch wide and is stretched an additional yard at the end of each minute. If the ant starts at one end of the strip of rubber, will it ever reach the other end, and if so when?

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 15, 2009 at 2:28 PM

Vijayan sir
Let me think on your chord problem
I have doubt on last step
r= sqrt ( 63x/22) where x is the area of small segment of the circle.
You are trying to find r based on this equation which contain another variable,
In the answer you fixed x,which is an extra condition not given in the question

vijayan December 16, 2009 at 7:07 AM

chord:
I admit all of you.
BUT AS A STUDENT in maths i have some doubts
1) a circle with radius 21 cm is drawn. can we divide the area in 1:8 by drawing chords,if so what is the length of chord?
2) can we draw a segment with area 154 sq cm ( length of chord is 8 cm),if so what will be the area of remaining part of that circle

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 16, 2009 at 7:31 AM

Vijayan Sir,

1) Please check 2.3 (1) in this document.

2) This is tough. First, you should solve for t (in radians) in the equation

(t - sin t)/4(1 - cos t) = 154/8

Then, calculate the area of the circle by

A = (64π)/(4 sin (t/2))

This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious how quickly you can find
out what is so unusual about it. It looks so plain you would think
nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is
unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may
not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find
out. Try to do so without any coaching

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 16, 2009 at 3:06 PM

The paragraph doesn't have 'e', the most frequent letter in English alphabet.

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 16, 2009 at 3:08 PM

Thanks to G. Philip. For positive values, as he points out, the solution may not be unique, but the number of solutions will be finite.

@umesh. you are punctual with correct answer.
Akhil's problem is with correct solution.
Now another problem child NIZAR in my class"HE mistakenly cancelled the 5's and got lucky.19/95=1/5.
The teacher is angry with him and shouted " who taught you to cancell same numbers fron numerator and from denominator?"then he replied" if my answer is correct award me full score"
" Iwill award you mark,if you show 3 more examples of two digits,five examples of three digits.but one condition ,don't use zeroes."
SUDDENLY Nizar worked out the same and received full score.
IF you are Nizar ,what will be your solutions ?

It was tempting to write the last comment as "I have the full solution, but this comment box (margin) is too small to fit it" :)

vijayan December 18, 2009 at 7:46 AM

thank you umesh sir.the teacher and student never expect such a number of solutions for this problem.
The teacher again fired his next qn to make the problem child sit in a corner.
but he was ready with the answer.the qn" DRAW two similar triangles ,both with integer sides .two sides of one triangle were the same as two in the other .the other sides differed by a prime"

One who knows Modular mathematics in a basic level can answer this question easily
1,1,5,17,61,217, 773,2753,8381....
To get a term take the sum of three times its predicessor and twice the term before the predecessor
kindly reveal your name and take a google account

I want some time to determine the general term .
The coefficient of the first term of the expression will be negative
Before 10 o clock I can give .
I have to solve another problem now
a^b*c^d= abcd
ok

Dear Professional Anonymous
Without the loss of generality,I can saythe following facts
** While taking the n th term of your sequence,one coefficient will be 5. Then only cancellation possible
** negetive and positive terms occur.One coefficient will be a negative number
***As usaual
Tn = 5 * (n-2) the term = -2* (n-1) th term
I thing we get all terms of this sequence
For getting the details of this type questions, we can refer
"CHARM OF PROBLEM SOLVING"Published by Association of mathematics teachers (India)
This question is a non routine problem.not discussed anywhere

tn=5t(n-2) - 2 t(n-1)
t8 = (5*-28)-(2*101)=-342
so & so

Congrats.

How many numbers between 1000 and 10000 have their sum of digits as 9?

vijayan December 22, 2009 at 7:17 AM

the number of multiples of 9=(1008 to 9999) =1000. simple ,progression.hence the answer

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 22, 2009 at 7:23 AM

No, the question is to find the number of numbers whose some of digits is 9. If we count all multiples of nine, some sums are 18, 27 etc.

AZEEZ December 22, 2009 at 11:34 AM

Dear Vijayan Sir,

In the number 9999, the sum of the digits is 36 not 9.

And the answer is wrong.

bhama December 23, 2009 at 9:09 AM

165 numbers have their sum of digits as 9

bhama December 23, 2009 at 10:17 AM

@ Vijayan Sirs comment 90

8,12,18 and 12,18,27 are the sides of the two similar triangle.

I think bhama madams answer is the only one solution of the concerned qn. thanks
now take "you have one each of the numbers 1,3,5,7,9. using just basic operations +,-,*,/,() , write 1 to 10."

@bhama madam: about 4,s;
in the hundred 5 more are still waiting 4 u.
A MERRY XMAS TO ALL.

1+3-5-7+9 = 1
(9+7)/(5+3)*1 = 2
9-7+5-3-1 = 3
(1+3)*5-7-9 = 4
1-3+5-7+9 = 5
(1-3)*5+7+9 = 6
1+3+5+7-9 = 7
9+7-5-3*1 = 8
1-3-5+7+9 = 9
9-7+5+3*1 = 10

DIVISIBILITY BY 13:
"Delete the last digit from the given number .Then subtract nine times the deleted digit from the remaining number.If what is left is divisible by 13,then so the original number.
eg :1) 221
22-1*9=13,221 is divisible by 13.
2)454: 45-4*9= 9,not divisible by 13.
OR delete last number and add four times it to the remaining number.
eg:1)221, 22+4*1=26--divisible by 13
2)454,45+4*4=61----not divisible by 13."
