>> Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Divide an 8x8 square into 4 pieces as shown in the left figure . Then rearrange the four pieces again as in the right figure. The area of first figure is 64 (8*8) units and area of the second figure is 65 units (13*5) . Why?

find the total area of four pieces separately:
total area = area of two triangles +area of two trapeziums.
=1/2( 8*3)*2+1/2*(8*5)*2=24+40=64
area of the square is 8*8=64
no difference.
(@nandana ,the area of 4*4=16,perimeter is=16;the area 0f 8*2=16,the perimeter is 20.)

The answer given by all are correct.Nandana's answer is not clear. The figur (13x5) is not a rect angle, But a rectangle with a hole in the middle. If you draw the figure accurately and magnify it you can see it.It will ba a a long thin parallalogram.

Thanks to everybody.

Two boys wish to cross a river. The only way to get to the other side is by boat, but that boat can only take one boy at a time. The boat cannot return on its own, there are no ropes or similar tricks, yet both boys manage to cross using the boat. How?

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 23, 2009 at 12:02 AM

If the intended answer is that the boys constantly jumps in the boat so that only one boy is in the boat, the answer is wrong. The boat will still sink.

VIJAYAN N M December 23, 2009 at 6:32 AM

the first boy crosses the river at first.he spend a little time there and returns.then the second boy crosses. he also returns.

Batter "A" hits the ball past the keeper, goes for a quick single gets it but the ball hit's a helmet of the keeper umpire give 5 runs penalty for hitting to helmet which is 5 runs to batsman....batter "A" gets century...Batter "B" is now on strike, 1 ball left, 1 to win and 6 to get for Century........Batter "B" hits the ball for six.

This is a statistical method known as BUFFON Problem'. This is obtained from a theoritical discussion of Buffon issue . We Opted this for finding pie
step 1
Draw some parallel lines on a sheet of paper..Preferably chart paper .Gap between lines should be same everywhere
step 2
Take a mall needle whose length is less than the distance (gap) between parallel lines
step3
Throw the needle on the parallel lines (paper)
step 4
Note the number of times the needle touch the lines.Sometimes it falls between the lines}
If N is the total number of throws and” n” is the number of times it touch the lines
Probability of touching the lines is n/N
Buffon found that n/N = 2L/(pie*d)
Lis the length of needle and “d “ is the gap
The experiment was repeated by 3048 imes .The value of pie is calculated as 3.1415929
While doing single project in my school ,the participant repeated 600 time and found 3..19 as the value

vijayan December 24, 2009 at 12:27 PM

THE trick here is that the holy triangle is not a triangle at all.it is some type of four sided polygon.A triangle with a HOLE is a HOLY TRIANGLE.if it is a triangle 5/2=8/3=13/5.

now try"HOW MANY Rt.triangles with integral sides have one side of 15?
9 34225 7396 81 900

AZEEZ December 24, 2009 at 3:26 PM

When 15 is hypotnuese, then only 1 such triangle is possible. (9, 12, 15)
When 15 is not hypotnuese, then

(113, 112),

(39, 36),

(20, 25),

(17, 8) are the other two sides.

So there are 5 possibilities.

AZEEZ December 27, 2009 at 12:14 PM

Find the least number which is divisible by 7 and gives the remainder 1 when it is devided by 2,3,4,5 & 6?

Umesh::ഉമേഷ് December 27, 2009 at 12:32 PM

301.

LCM of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 is 3 x 4 x 5 = 60. We need to solve 60a + 1 = 7b, or 7b - 60a = 1.

The continued fraction expansion of (7/60) is [0; 8, 1, 1, 3] = [0; 8, 1, 1, 2, 1], with convergents 0/1, 1/8, 1/9, 2/17, 5/43, 7/60. So, a = 5, b= 43 is a solution.

So, the general solution is a = 5 + 7k, b = 43 + 60k.

So, the smallest number is 60 x 5 + 1 = 7 x 43 = 301.

AZEEZ December 27, 2009 at 12:49 PM

Dear Umesh Sir,

301 is correct answer.

Now try this

Mirror Image number

If we write a number in reverse order then it ia the mirror image of the first one.

For eg:-4321 is the mirror image number of 1234.

Now consider 1089
The mirror image is 9801
And 1089 is a factor of 9801.

Can you find one more example?

Muneer December 29, 2009 at 3:16 PM

I think nobody has correct answer for the original question so far. Let me do a simple effort to explain the reason for the extra 1 unit area in the second figure.
The hypotenuse of the triangle formed by green trapezium and red triangle is not actually a straight line. It has a slight twist inwards. it can be verified in the following way.
In the trapezium, hypotenuse's horizontal length is increased by 5 units while vertical length is increase by 2 units. i.e. for 1 unit of vertical increase, there should be 5/2 units of horizontal increase. In this logic, for 5 units of vertical increase, there should be 5*5/2 = 25/2 units of horizontal increase. But in the diagram, for 5 units of vertical increase, there is 13 units of horizontal increase. This is because in the red triangle, for every units of vertical increase there is 8/3 units of horizontal increase.
The same arrangement gap is applicable for the other half of the bigger rectangle.

In short:
The diagonal of the rectangle is formed by the sloppy line of green trapezium and hypotenuse of red triangle. Sloppy line of green trapezium grows horizontally by 5/2 units for 1 unit of vertical growth. where as hypotenuse of red triangle grows horizontally by 8/3 units for 1 unit of horizontal growth. When we combine these 2 lines, it becomes a distorted at their joining point. This creates a hole in the figure.

vijayan December 29, 2009 at 5:20 PM

@Muneer
kindly go through comment 34 of this post. your explanation is fine.
if we calculate the joining angle , it also proves you are right.( if it is a triangle 5/2=8/3=13/5),(the total of the angle is not equal to 90) .thank you muneer.
