ReplyDeleteWhen both the resistances R1 and R2 are included in the circuit the effective resistance is 40 ohm. But when the switch S2 is on, no current will flow through the resistance R2 as the easiest path is through the switch. So the effective resistance is only 20 ohm. Hence the current increases through R1 so the heat also increases.
